Through the efforts of the Undergraduate Studies (UGS) Strategic Planning Committee and feedback from the division, strategic goals have been identified to guide our division’s efforts over the next 3 years (2018-2021). 

Our Mission:

Through collaboration, advocacy and innovation, Undergraduate Studies serves as the catalyst for enhancing the quality of the KU undergraduate student experience with an emphasis on designing academic resources and pathways that foster success for all students.

Our Vision:

We envision an inclusive environment in which all students graduate empowered to reach their fullest potential, develop into lifelong learners, and make meaningful contributions to society.

 

Strategic Goal #1: Identify and maximize partnerships to enhance programs and services
Objective #1: Pursue collaborations with internal KU units and external partners to enhance student opportunities and impact.

    • Number of university-wide events that UGS participates in as a sponsoring unit

Objective #2: Develop strategic alliances with colleagues from peer institutions (regionally and nationally) to share ideas, best practices, and potential funding and/or partnership opportunities.

Objective #3: Identify opportunities and increase UGS staff presence in cross-division events and activities.

Objective #4: Explore and/or enhance opportunities for faculty partnership and curriculum engagement with UGS-related content.

Strategic Goal #2: Innovate programs and services to meet the needs of all students

Objective #1: Identify students’ needs, reduce barriers, and develop opportunities to enhance learning and success both in and out of the classroom.

Strategic Goal #3: Create and promote an inclusive and diverse environment through our offices, programming, and services

Objective #1: Expand training for professional and student staff to acquire tools to recognize inequalities and create systems to help all students thrive.

    • Number and percentage of staff participating in trainings

Objective #2: Implement practices to support and encourage the hiring of a diverse student and professional staff and ensure all candidates have an understanding of equity and inclusion within and beyond the KU community.

    • Number of trainings offered that promote inclusive hiring practices and number of hiring staff participants in these trainings
    • Number and types of equity and inclusion trainings offered to new hires and participation rates
    • Number of professional and student staff hired with new hiring standard in place

Objective #3: Expand our collaboration with campus and community partners to ensure that students have opportunities to learn across difference, with standard protocols to ensure welcoming and inclusive programming and events.

Objective #4: Expand our student outreach efforts to ensure that a broader selection of students have access to support services and engaged learning opportunities, while addressing barriers that prevent the participation of underrepresented student populations.

Strategic Goal #4: Identify and secure resources that allow for continued staff development and growth

Objective #2: Seek and develop opportunities to recognize staff for meritorious work.

Objective #3: Pursue innovative funding opportunities, particularly through partnership, to further advance programs, services, staff and their development.

Strategic Goal #5: Atrticulate the impact of Undergraduate Studies' efforts on the KU student experience within the division and to external stakeholders to enhance programs and services.

Objective #1: Establish communication materials that strategically highlight Undergraduate Studies’ work and impact on the KU student experience.

Objective #2: Develop and expand communication strategies and resources that foster an awareness of the resources that impact undergraduate student success.

  • Metric(s) for Objective #2:
    • Number and type of internal communication strategies and resources
    • Number of all-staff meetings and staff attendance rates
    • Annual reporting and strategic plan development for all units within UGS

Goal: Purpose toward which an endeavor is directed. Long-term, nebulous and hard to quantify or put in a timeline. An overarching principle that guides decision making. Statement of a desired outcome.

Objective: Something that one’s efforts or actions are intended to attain or accomplish; purpose; target; action taken to achieve goal. Accomplished in the short- or medium-term, and should be measurable. Specific, measureable steps that are taken to meet a goal.

Initiative: A very unit-specific program/service that is established to meet an objective and its corresponding goal. It is specific, measurable (has at least one metric associated with it), has a specific timeline and a responsible agent.

Metric: Numbers-count or ratio-that help you understand how you are doing against your objectives or initiatives. Used to assist you and others in evaluating the progress made in a given year. Other ways to describe this include: How will you know you’ve been successful? and/or How will you measure your success? (Note: An objective or initiative may have more than one metric because you may be gathering supporting information in more than one way).
