Our DEI 2017-2018 academic year goals:

Hiring Practices

We will implement practices to support and encourage the hiring of a diverse student and professional staff through efforts to ensure a diverse and talented applicant pool, increase recruitment outreach with professional organizations that support underrepresented groups in higher education, and increase training for hiring staff.

Action Item:

Unintended Bias training for all Directors and Associate Directors

Purpose:

This training will provide those in charge of hiring with the tools to recognize their biases and strategies for preventing them from unfairly influencing recruitment and hiring efforts.

Metric/Outcome:

  • 100% completion of the course by every Director & Associate Director

Collaboration/Programming

We will expand our collaboration with campus and community partners to ensure that our students have opportunities to learn across difference. We will coordinate and streamline these partnerships to ease the process of finding and navigating the program that best fits our students’ needs.

Action Item:

Formalize and coordinate programs and initiatives of common interest between the Offices of Student Affairs and Undergraduate Studies

Purpose:

This coordination will increase the effectiveness of services and programing in areas of shared responsibilities, as well as broaden the number of students reached.

Metric/Outcome:

  • Coordination of:
    • Parent engagement/communication
    • Professional development series
  • Process-mapping/streamlining the medical withdraw process

Who We Serve

We will expand our student outreach efforts to ensure that students have access to support services and engaged learning opportunities available through Undergraduate Studies and will address barriers that prevent the participation of underrepresented student populations.

Action Item:

Continue the development of The Diversity Collaborative

Purpose:

The Diversity Collaborative brings together key university academic scholar support programs. The coordination of efforts between these programs will allow for better transparency and access for students. This is accomplished by helping to identify & reach out to students who are not currently being served by any program and helping students find the program of best fit.

Metric/Outcome:

  • Compiled list of dates/deadlines
  • Program comparison chart
  • Collective promotional materials

Training

We will expand training for staff and program faculty to be responsive to a range of student needs, to acquire tools to recognize inequalities and create systems that help all students to thrive. We will invest in preparing staff to best assist students as they learn to use and navigate systems.

Action Item:

Arrange group training events for Safe Zone, De-escalation, and Bystander Intervention

Purpose:

These trainings provide our staff with the tools needed to more effectively respond to a range of students’ needs, especially those in vulnerable situations.

Metric/Outcome:

  • All full-time staff attending 2 out of the 3 training events this year
